Minnesota Shining Bright: New Law Phases Out Mercury-Containing Lights

Minnesota's Clean Lighting Bill

Minnesota is taking a big step towards a cleaner, brighter future! The state recently passed the Clean Lighting bill, which phases out the sale of general-purpose mercury-containing lights. This means goodbye to fluorescent bulbs and hello to a healthier environment for all Minnesotans.

Why the switch?

Mercury is a nasty toxin that pollutes our water and air. By eliminating these lights, we’re protecting our health and reducing hazardous waste. Plus, there’s a financial upside! Businesses that switch to LED lighting will see significant savings on electricity and maintenance costs in the long run.

What does this mean for businesses?

Commercial building operators can keep their existing stock of fluorescent screw-in bulbs and tubes. However, they won’t be able to buy new ones after these dates:

    • January 1, 2025: Screw-in or bayonet-based compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs)

    • January 1, 2026: Pin-based linear or compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs)

Making the Switch Easier: Rebates and Incentives

While the upfront cost of LED lighting can be slightly higher than fluorescent bulbs, the long-term savings on energy bills make it a worthwhile investment. To help ease the transition, many utility companies in Minnesota offer rebates and incentives for businesses to switch to LED lighting. These programs can significantly reduce the cost of upgrading your lights.
